Where am I?
A weathered signpost where two paths diverge — one well-worn and familiar, one barely visible through the trees.
Coaching
You've been standing here longer than you realise. One path is the one you know — the safe, the small, the 'good enough.' The other is the one you've been avoiding — the one that calls to something deeper in you. You didn't end up here by accident. Fear led you to the familiar path, again and again, until you forgot the other one existed. But you haven't forgotten. That's why you're here. Let's look at both paths honestly, without judgment.
🧠 Cognitive Awareness
Self-abandonment often hides behind the thought 'I'm just being practical' or 'I don't really want that anyway.' These are cognitive avoidance patterns — the mind rationalising the choice to stay small. The first step in CBT is simply noticing the thoughts that steer you away from what matters. You don't have to change them yet. Just name them.
Guided Exercise: Mapping the Crossroads
Be honest. No one will read this but you. Describe both paths as they actually are — not as you wish they were.
The familiar path — describe the safe, unfulfilling choices you keep making. What does this path look like day to day?
The path you avoid — what would the fulfilling choice actually look like? Be specific. What are you drawn to that you keep talking yourself out of?
What keeps you on the familiar path? What do you tell yourself when you consider the other one?
